Laboratory Diagnosis of Human Parasitic Infections

The course focuses on the diagnostic aspects of parasitic infections of importance in routine clinical practice in European countries. There will be intense practical sessions using high quality clinical samples for microscopy examination, real-life cases and interactive photo quizzes. These sessions will cover about 70% of the course and will be alternated with in-depth lectures given by several experts in the field of clinical parasitology. The focus will be on the morphology and microscopic determination of human parasites, but alternative diagnostic procedures will be discussed as well. On account of the small size of the student group, there will be many opportunities for interaction with the facilitators and exchange of experiences. 

The course has originally been designed for Dutch clinical medical microbiologists in training and experienced senior technicians, but recently has been adapted for an international audience. International participants can register for one week only or for the full course. They are kindly requested to contact the course coordinator for more information and details about the registration.
 
By the end of the first week of the course participants will be familiar with clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of most common European parasitic infections, including those seen in travellers and immigrants such as malaria, schistosomiasis and intestinal helminths. Some less common parasitic infections will be briefly discussed at the end of the week, as well as the role of molecular diagnostics within routine laboratory practice.
 
The second week will include more in depth aspects of medical parasitology and issues specifically of interest within a Dutch context. By the end of the course participants will be familiar with, amongst others, parasitic infections of immunocompromised patients, ectoparasites, parasite delusions, and parasitic infections rarely seen in Western Europe.
 
This parasitology course has been successfully organized by the same Leiden group for more than 20 years.

Course book and other requirements
Dutch participants will use the book Medisch parasitologische diagnostiek, dr. A.M. Polderman, uitgave 2005. After registration and payment they will receive the book about 2 weeks before the start of the course. Non-Dutch participants will receive English reading material.
The use of a laboratory coat is obligatory and participants are expected to bring their own.

Attendance Grants
Opposite to the 2016 course there will be no ESCMID “young scientist members” grant to cover the registration fee in 2018.

Accreditation
The organisers of the course will apply for European CME accreditation through EACCME, as well as
the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Medische Microbiologie (NVMM) and the Nederlandse Vereniging voor Parasitologie.
